The antapical portion of the cell is rounded and can bear small protruberances. The sulcal list is relatively narrow and of similar width along its entire length. Dinophysis acuminata is a producer of DSP toxins. The taxonomic position of this species is still uncertain with many, very similar species existing which could be sub species of Dinophysis acuminata.
